Ole Evinrude was born in Norway. When he was a small boy his mom and dad moved to America. When they were coming over in the huge ship Ole wanted to spend all of his time in the engine room. He loved motors.
He began to build his first sailboat when he was eleven but his dad did not want him to be a sailor and the wood from the boat was used for firewood. Secretly, Ole began building another boat. When it was finished and Ole showed it to his dad, Ole’s dad was proud of his son and agreed that he could keep it.
Ole began inventing at an early age. He wanted to be one of the first to design and build a horseless carriage or car. He invented one and the neighbors were amazed by its loud noise and crazy motion.
When Ole was in his early twenties he met a neighbor, Bess. Bess helped him with the office work for his inventions. One day he asked Bess to go on a picnic. He rowed her out to Lake Ripley and as they got out of the boat, Bess said she really wanted some ice cream. It was a hot day! Ole got back in the boat and rowed to the ice cream stand on the opposite shore; before he could get back, the ice cream began to melt. He decided there and then to invent an engine for a rowboat so he could deliver unmelted ice cream to his beloved Bess. Bess and Ole married and he did just that!
Before long his son Ralph grew up and decided to make engines that would go faster!
